Who Foundations Is For

Built for People Who've Already Served, and Who Are Ready to Run

Our democracy deserves people with courage, integrity, and lived experience. It deserves servant leaders who want to lead through politics.

Foundations equips servant leaders who are ready to run with the skills needed to launch and lead a competitive campaign. Participants work in small groups with experienced campaign advisors to craft their public narratives, practice fundraising pitches, and develop the core skills required to run for office.

How do I prepare to run for office? That's the question at the heart of this program — and every session is designed to help you answer it.

Program Eligibility

To participate in Foundations, you must be planning to run for office in the next two to five years. It's okay if you've run before and didn't win and are interested in running again. You may not be currently declared or actively running for office.

Answering the call

Still weighing whether running is the right step? Our Answering the Call program may be a better starting point. Most Foundations participants complete ATC first. Reach out to Laura with questions about which program is right for you.

Our Approach

The Work That Wins Campaigns Starts Before the Campaign Does.

Most candidates jump straight to tactics. The ones who lead well — and govern well — do the foundational work first: knowing who they are, why they're running, and what they stand for under pressure.

BE

Who You Are

Your core values, your leadership mission, your shadow mission. You can't lead authentically without knowing these deeply — and communicating them clearly under pressure. This is where the work in Foundations begins, and what everything else is built on.

KNOW

What You Bring

The skills and strategies of running for office: how to tell your story, how to raise money with conviction, how to research a race and understand what winning requires. Foundations gives you the framework and the practice reps.

Do

How You Lead

The campaign is where your values meet the world. Foundations prepares you to lead with authenticity and resilience — and to keep your footing once you win.

The Curriculum

Clarity, Conviction, and Campaign Readiness

Foundations moves from deep inner work — who you are and why you're running — to the concrete skills that get you ready to launch. Over five weeks or two days (depending on your cohort format), we'll guide you through critical exercises, group discussion, and small group live practice rounds. This program is energizing and inspiring, and requires deep engagement during the sessions and a commitment to the homework in between.

Before anything else, you do the work of knowing who you are. Distill your core values, articulate your leadership mission, and understand your shadow mission — the version of yourself that can emerge when you lose your footing. Voters don't vote for résumés; they vote for people they trust. This is where that trust is built.

Your story — who you are, who your community is, and why this moment matters — is your most powerful campaign tool. You'll develop your public narrative, practice it with peers, and receive direct feedback from experienced advisors. You leave with a working version you can use from day one of your race.

Understanding what a race actually requires is foundational. You'll research the offices you're considering — what it costs to win, how many votes it takes, what getting your name on the ballot involves. This is where aspiration meets reality, and where your planning gets serious.

Your network is the most important asset your campaign will have. You'll begin organizing it with intention. Asking for money is a skill — and one that feels different once you understand what you're actually inviting people to do. You'll develop your fundraising approach, practice making the ask with expert guidance, and find a frame that's honest: you're not soliciting donations; you're giving people the chance to invest in the future they believe in.

The harder-to-teach skill: how to show up as a candidate. Holding a room, telling your story under pressure, projecting the kind of presence that makes people want to follow you — this is where you practice all of it.

Hear directly from a servant leader who ran for office and won. An invaluable opportunity to ask questions — you'll get to hear from someone who was in your shoes and understands what it takes to serve again through politics.

In Their Own Words

New Politics Academy is the only organization I've come across that focuses on preparing leaders to truly serve the public. NPA's emphasis on the 'why' behind my mission has been invaluable as I've sought ways to continue serving through politics.

COMMON QUESTIONS

FAQ

Answering the Call is for servant leaders exploring whether political leadership is the right next step. Foundations is for those who have made that decision. ATC centers on reflection and clarity; Foundations focuses on building concrete campaign readiness — narrative, fundraising, network, and research. Most participants complete ATC first, and we strongly recommend it.

All levels. Participants run for city council, school board, state legislature, and Congress. The work — your values, your narrative, your organized network — is equally essential regardless of the race, and equally valuable whether you're running next year or in five years.

No. You don't need a specific seat, timeline, or state. What matters is knowing that running for office is in your future. The work done in Foundations — clarifying your values, building your narrative, organizing your network — holds its value for years, even decades.

Depending on the format you enroll in, there may be reflection exercises to complete before your first session. Either way, you'll get clear guidance from our team once you're accepted. Come ready to go deep — that's the most important preparation.

No. All New Politics Academy programs are completely free. We believe that cost should never be a barrier for a servant leader ready to lead through politics.

Yes. Because New Politics Academy is a nonpartisan organization, active duty members are eligible to participate. Reach out to npa@newpolitics.org with any questions about eligibility.
